Most of the EV charging I do is from excess solar production, however at times of low sunshine I need to charge from the grid. I have been using two schedules for this. One at night and one during the day when electricity is cheap.
The problem is I sometimes forget to turn of the schedule off after charging has taken place.
What would be ideal is a feature that initiated a once off charge for x hours (or y Kw) when next in a cheap period / schedule.
Yes we need a Charge OffPeak button.
I’ve also been looking for a similar feature or capability. I want to use Charge on Solar daily and yet still have a simple way for my wife to initiate a full car charge from the grid only when needed.
I primarily use Charge on Solar to casually accumulate battery charge to cover our daily needs. About once a week we need to take a long trip and I may want to start an off peak charging session from the grid to achieve a specific SoC in the car battery.
I’d like a version of the Charge Now button that does the following:
- Use either the ToU rate schedule from the Powerwall3 or just a simple Grid Charging Allowed schedule in ChargeHQ to identify the next low cost charging period.
- When ready to start charging then Set the Powerwall’s Backup Reserve to the current Powerwall Charge Level to preserve that SoC even while charging the car from the grid.
- Start charging the car from the grid. (Using the car’s normal charge rate and charge limit is OK)
- When car finishes charging then restore the Powerwall’s Backup Reserve to the value it was before step 2 above.
This might be implemented either as a separate Charge OffPeak button, or as config options to the Charge Now button.
I’d say something like this is a logical and even necessary adjunct to the main Charge on Solar feature. Charge on Solar is great, but how do we charge our cars when we need more???
